We briefly discuss possible solutions and tools we can provide, starting with the early phase when fertility issues may arise. We then address the pregnancy period, the birth process, and the first days of the foal’s life.

In the coming weeks, a series of blogs will delve deeper into medical challenges and corresponding treatment options.

  5. Big Little Fats; benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids in the Horse

Omega-3 fatty acids for a healthy horse

While nutrition has historically been considered the appropriate amount of nutrients needed for energy, to maintain weight and promote growth, the majority of dietary effects may actually occur in ways that are, in fact, not always obvious to the naked eye. This is until there is evidence of a health concern. But what is consumed through the daily diet really begins by influencing at the level of the cell and has a profound effect on each and every living animal. What the horse consumes has the ability to benefit so many areas of health, including immunity, athletic performance, reproduction, metabolism, longevity and more. But what the horse takes in daily also has the ability to interfere or take away from the health and well-being of the animal. A specific fat, the omega-3 fatty acid, has a significant role in equine nutrition due to its multiple applications on numerous health areas. 6. The New Feeding: A practical handbook for better horse welfare

The books The New Feeding and The Equinesports Veterinary Manual

Many of today's equestrian businesses still use, in terms of management and training, methods based on insights from the last century. If we, as a profession, want to continue supporting equestrian sports in a positive way over the next decade, it is essential to revise these methods and provide horse owners with sufficient practical tools to do so.

The crucial role of proper rations

Nutrition plays a vital role within managing horse welfare; a proper ration is essential. Although a ration analysis provides insight into the composition, it does not reflect the quality of the feed. Additionally, it is crucial that the horse can properly digest the feed. Internal factors, such as the condition of the teeth, the age of the horse and any underlying health issues, play a major role in this process. External factors such as training, housing and group composition also affect digestion. Once these aspects are in harmony, only then can the need for supplements be considered.

  7. HorStem; world’s first drug based on equine umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells

HorStem; world’s first drug based on equine umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells

HorStem is the first registered veterinary medicine based on mesenchymal stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord of horses. Stem cells reduce lameness in horses with mild to moderate degenerative joint disease (OA).

It is a ready-to-use, sterile, injectable suspension for intra-articular use in horses. Each vial contains 15 million active stem cells, more than enough to achieve the minimum effective dose in the joint regardless of the degree of inflammation or the patient's immune system status.

    How does HorStem work?

The mechanism of action of HorStem is illustrated in the figure on the right. Mesenchymal stem cells are activated in the synovium by inflammatory cytokines. In response, they secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines such as Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

While PGE2 is primarily known for its pro-inflammatory effects, it also plays a crucial role in regulating inflammation. It is one of the major immunomodulatory cytokines in the body.

When applied to horses with OA, HorStem inhibits
