While most weaned foals receive plenty of forages (hay and pasture), concentrated feed given to them can vary significantly in quality and quantity from one stud to another. Early rapid development as the main criterion, there can be major dietary shortcomings for sport breeds. While needs for cobalt, iron, and manganese are well covered by different rations, amounts of other micronutrients can vary depending on the situation. Certain sport horse studs mostly use forages (pasture) and provide almost no concentrates; in this case, intake of trace elements and vitamins D and E is rarely sufficient to meet the horse's needs. On the other hand, other intensive practices are fairly close to those used on yearlings in training; in this case, intake of micronutrients is higher, but is still insufficient to meet all needs.
