Bacampicillin HCl 12,9 g
Bacampicillin is a prodrug of ampicillin, a broad-spectrum, semisynthetic, beta-lactam aminopenicillin antibiotic with bactericidal activity. Bacampicillin is administered orally and is hydrolysed by esterases present in the gastrointestinal tract to its active metabolite, ampicillin. It then binds to and subsequently disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing cell lysis.
Bacampicillin is synthesized by linking ampicillin with an ester. Through this linkage the ampicillin easily reaches the horse’s intestines where it can be absorbed into the blood stream by the intestinal villi. The bioavailability after oral administration is 40%, virtually independent of the nutritional status of the animal. In comparison, the bioavailability after oral administration of regular ampicillin (and amoxicillin) is only a few percent, meaning you would need to give an exceptionally high dosage to reach the same plasma concentrations.
To compensate for the high molecular weight of bacampicillin the dosage is 21,5 mg/kg. This allows plasma concentrations comparative to those of parenterally administered ampicillin (at a dosage of 15 mg/kg) to be reached within 1 to 12 hours of administration (Winther et al., Research in Veterinary Science, Vol. 92, 1, 2012, 111-115).
Bacampicillin granulate can be delivered in packets of 4,3 g bacampicillin (suitable for a 200 kg horse) or in packets of 12,9 g (suitable for a 600 kg horse). This granulate can be mixed with tasty vehicle for administration such as apple sauce or syrup, though it should be administered quickly as bacampicillin is not very stable in an aqueous environment.
Care should be taken when handling this product. This product should not be administered by anyone with known penicillin hypersensitivity. Skin contact should be avoided.
